N is for Naboo

What stuck out to me from the very beginning was that Naboo elected its queen. I mean, who does that? Elect a queen? Queens rule cuz of a bloodline or conquest. Not because they were elected. That's for presidents and prime ministers. But nope, not on Naboo.

Naboo is from the Star Wars prequels, most notably Episode 1 and Episode 2. It's the home of Padme Amidala and Jar Jar Binks. It's got some pretty intense swamps and a mountain range that bisects an entire continent. But I think my favorite part is that the capital city's, Theed's, architecture was inspired by that of Frank Lloyd Wright. It's probably just a set design thing, but I like to think Wright is still influential centuries in the future.

  1. Agreed, the architecture and general scenery of Naboo was well done. We'll just overlook that Jar Jar Binks part. ;)

  2. I knew you'll pick Naboo on N day ;) I adore this planet, and Episode 1 is connected with some precious memories for me, but your two points are valid, I always admired the design and architecture of this planet, and those scenes on Episode 6, the added ones, where the whole galaxy is celebrating the end of the empire, I have my eye on Naboo every time. If I to chose where to live it would be there.

  3. I don't like the Star Wars prequels, but I'll go for an elected queen - you go Naboo! :)

  4. I don't understand why they referred to her as a queen. I don't hate the prequels - they were good fun, and filled in a bit of backstory etc. I've seen the trailer for the sequel, and it looks pretty good :-)

  5. I loved the visuals of Naboo. The clothes, the architecture, the decorations, they were all very pretty. But yeah, the queen thing was weird, especially because they are elected for a short term, and they start when they are 16... Not a very useful political system :D
