Welcome to the first post of this year's April A-Z challenge! My theme this year is planets in Science Fiction. Have no idea what I'm talking about? Click the banner to the right.
Alderaan, for those of who don't know,
is the home planet of Princess Leia. You know, of Star Wars fame. But
it's probably most famous for being the first planet the Death Star
blew up.

Poor, poor Alderaan.
The scene in the movie always got to me
when I was little. It showed just how far the Empirewas willing to
go. And not just to get what he wanted, Leia had already caved, but
to prove a point. No wonder the Rebel Alliance was formed.
(I'm sure there were other reasons too, but my knowledge of the expanded universe is pretty much nothing.)
I remember being so shocked when Alderaan blew up the first time I saw Star Wars - it was like, no wait, they can't do that!

I was too young when I first watched it to remember much of my reactions, but it was probably something similar.
DeleteThat scene in the first movie was amazing. The entire theater gasped at once.
ReplyDeleteO, it would have been amazing to see it when it first came out! Sadly, I'm a late 80s child.

Really? Does Star Wars have a different rule due to it's awesomeness?
DeleteI remember being so upset when I first saw that scene. All those people just gone in the blink of an eye. Made me really start rooting against Darth Vader, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteI know right? What a way to introduce a villian.
DeleteI just started the A to Z thing. I should have chosen a theme. Ah well. I remember Alderaan being blown to smithereens. It was a shock at the movies, on the big screen and we all hated Darth Vadar that much more.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about not having a theme, plenty of people don't. But yes, so many people just detested Darth Vadar after this.
DeleteI think if I watched that now, I'd be more upset than when I first saw it. Although, I remember watching the third movie and being afraid for the people on Jabba's barge when it blew up. Mom had to explain that no, they got all the people off before blowing it up.
ReplyDeleteReally? Hmm, I guess once I've seen things before they loose their impact for me. Or used to anyway. Peace Corps turned me into a crying mess because I cried three times when I rewatched Lilo and Stitch a few weeks ago.
DeleteOMG! that scene is always scary, and what more scary is Obi One's reaction to it. I've always found the death star a perfect name for that weapon. Poor Alderaan :( love this theme, keep em rolling.

It was well named, wasn't it? Which is both good and bad, cuz now I can't use it.
DeleteSometimes I wish I knew Star Wars references... I do not watch/did not hold interest in it. #atozchallenge
ReplyDelete*glares* How can you not like Star Wars?! But at least you tried, by the sounds of it. I can't say anything against trying and then deciding it doesn't work for you. But for just simple future understanding, wikipedia is a girl's best friend. ^_^
DeleteThe idea of exploding an entire planet is just nuts! Not sure if you have read the SPECIES IMPERATIVE series, but it's one of my fave sci-fis ever. There is a certain species of alien in that series that basically destroys moons and stuff around their planet, 'cause they're not useful. For them it's just a matter of fact thing, but for me reading it, I was horrified!
ReplyDeleteI just love your theme. This is amazing.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the 2015 A to Z Challenge!
