Zombies vs Unicorns edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier |
It's a common debate nowadays, vampires
or werewolves, and so I found a comparison of two difference mythical
creatures, zombies and unicorns, a welcome read. Probably because I
love unicorns and fully support Holly Black's Team Unicorn in this
head to head story competition.
Justine Larbalestier however is rooting
for Team Zombie.
Each team leader sent out feelers to YA
authors (Cassandra Claire, Scott Westerfeld, Meg Cabot, Libba Bray,
Garth Nix, the names go on) and received six stories each on their
respective creature. The two editors then siced the stories on each
other, with commentary between them shedding light on the history of
the myths and why one is better than the other.
And despite being a firm Team Unicron
member, I have to say the opposition made some good points.
Each story is unique in themes,
setting, characters. You have killer unicorns and those who who have
dainty sparkly hooves. Similarly, you have reformed zombies as well
as mindless brain eaters. I'd like to say I have favorites, but I
can't. Each story is well written and has stuck with me. I think of
one, and it leads straight to another in my mind. After having been
trucking through old school SF for awhile and a historical romance I
really should have finished months ago, this was a great refresher
for my reading self.
And on top of that, I want to send a
copy of this to at least five different people because this book begs
to be shared.
This sounds great fun - surprised I haven't heard about it ! Thanks for joining in the blog hop :)
